The business
HireMyTrailer is an Australian marketplace for renting trailers from the people who own them. An owner has an asset that sits idle most of the week; a renter needs one for an afternoon.
The challenge
Trailer owners had assets sitting idle and renters had no trusted way to find them. HireMyTrailer needed a marketplace where a stranger could find, book, pay for and collect a trailer without a single phone call — and where both sides felt safe doing it.
- 01
Both sides are strangers, and the asset is worth money
A trailer is expensive enough that handing it to someone you have never met needs more than good intentions. Every protection an owner would normally get from knowing the renter had to be replaced by something the marketplace itself provides.
- 02
A phone call is a marketplace failure
If either side has to ring the other to finish a booking, the marketplace is really a directory. Search, availability, price, agreement and payment all had to complete online, unattended.
- 03
The bond is the awkward part
A security bond has to be taken, evidenced and released without either party chasing it — otherwise the friction lands exactly where trust is thinnest.
- 04
Verification only counts at the handover
Checking a licence is useful at the moment the trailer changes hands, which means it has to work on a phone, outdoors, in the time it takes to hitch up.
What we did
We built the marketplace across web and both mobile platforms: location-based search, fully online booking and payment, digital rental agreements, automated bond handling, licence verification at pickup, and two-sided reviews so the community holds itself to standard. Owners get listing management and a clear view of what they are earning.
What we built
Location-based search
Renters find trailers by where they actually are — the only search that matters for an asset you have to drive to.
Booking and payment, fully online
Availability, price, booking and payment complete in one flow with nobody on the other end.
Digital rental agreements
The agreement is generated and accepted in the product, so every rental carries the same terms and a record of them.
Automated bond handling
Bonds are held and released by the system rather than negotiated between the two parties.
Licence verification at pickup
Verification at the handover itself, on a phone, in the open.
Two-sided reviews
Owner and renter both get reviewed, so the community holds itself to a standard instead of the platform policing it alone.
Listing and earnings management for owners
Owners manage their listings and see what the asset is actually earning them.
